Introducing our chess characters to America In 2013, the year before we launched at Toy Fair, Yamie Chess was looking for an original way to introduce our cartoon chess characters to America. So we decided to make an animation for kids, big and small, in towns, cities and small-town communities across the nation and Canada. On our 12 month road-trip (see map above), traveling from the Big Apple Film Festival in New York where we won Best Animation, to the Utah Arts Festival in Salt Lake City, we played our animated short film, King Tigermore in Strawberry Fields to wonderful family audiences and picked up some pretty prestigious international film industry awards in the process; including 55 major U.S. official film festival selections that we have published below. In this section, we'd like to share some information about our award-winning journey, and give fans an insight into the cel animation methods that we used to synchronize our short animated film to a historic Mozart symphony!
1. Road journey across America—King Tigermore in Strawberry Fields 2. Synchronizing Mozart to hand-drawn cel animation 3. Executive summary: Awards and official selections 4. Complete list of USA film industry awards Video above: King Tigermore in Strawberry Fields - Winner of the 2013 Canada International Film Festival Royal Reel Award in Animation King Tigermore In Strawberry Fields is the animated sequel short film to the educational math comic in the first Yamie Chess® School Assistant, The Adventures of Tigermore and the Mind Angels® for scholastic K-8 mathematics, logic and science learning. It all begins one beautiful summer's day in Strawberry Fields, when eight-year old Kimi, the American boy math prodigy and chess genius from Queens, New York, falls asleep during a chess match in Central Park, NYC, and dreams that the white king chess piece in his chess game has transformed into King Tigermore, the friend he meets in the Yamie Chess School Assistant, when he travels to The Mind Kingdom™, the magical place that can only be reached by going to sleep under anesthetic in a hospital operation. Tigermore (the King of Lights) takes his hand, and together the magical duo take to the skies, flying out of New York, down Broadway, above the Empire State Building, past the Statue of Liberty, soaring high through the swirling mists above the Atlantic Ocean, when it starts raining math symbols from the enchanting midnight sky. Lady Liberty's tablet is deliberately blank to represent that the beauty of the American idea, is not defined by a date in history, but by the enduring strength in the hearts of our children, whose futures are yet to be written. An American hero, King Tigermore takes young Kimi back to the Mind Space (called The Mind Kingdom™), as they fly through the sleeping, floating minds that represent everyone's hidden consciousness. They journey back to the beautiful mind-planet of Snowmelt (a perfect utopia of harmony) in the Yamie mind-galaxy, where Kimi is reunited with his magical chessy friends, the Mind Angels (Aurora, Belskina and Little Bu), who all represent the classic white chess pieces in the story. (In the educational math comic there is also a secret fourth Mind Angel called Biancàra) But in a thrilling turn of events, our young hero is chased by Vigdor and the Chromemunchers (who represent the black chess pieces on the board), who are dastardly chess baddies, trying to steal the secret to Kimi's chess genius. In the animation, Kimi dreams that King Tigermore and Siberia (the white knight piece) help him escape by falling through a mind mirror and back to his body in New York, where the dualist interface ends, and he wakes up. Like a modern day Alice in Wonderland, Kimi realizes that it was only a dream, because you can only get to The Mind Kingdom™ by going to sleep under a general anesthetic in a hospital operation! So as he only nodded off, Kimi picks up the white king piece with his hand and plays his next chess move. But was he daydreaming?... Or was it real?... Set in an imaginative cartoon chess universe, where mathematics is king, to inspire young minds; Yamie Chess® is the scholastic K-8 chess explorer for educational mathematics, logic and science learning in school, and explores René Descartes's Mind/Body Dualism. Synchronizing Mozart to hand-drawn cel animation
|Hear this page read aloud by narrator||Play||Time|
Like a modern day Alice in Wonderland, we knew that telling the magical and abstract Yamie Chess story of The Adventures of Tigermore and the Mind Angels; a timeless, science-fiction fantasy about a young American boy genius from New York, whose mind visits a magical universe (The Mind Kingdom™) by going to sleep under anesthetic in a hospital operation, and where all the characters correspond to the classic chessmen on the board, was going to be tough. As the Yamie Chess® learning aid is primarily a math tool for K-8 education, we needed to use cartoons to bring to life the Yamie Chess® story's creative vision and narrative concept, with dynamic physical modeling, flawless animation keyframing and original character development, to make the storyboard visually appealing for children's understanding. So in King Tigermore In Strawberry Fields, we decided to leave out the computer generated graphics, and spend 12 long months going back to the original cel animation techniques, as first developed back in the early twentieth century by the American animation pioneers, Earl Hurd and John Randolph Bray. These were the days when the skill of the hand-drawn artist was required to ink each frame onto a tray of delicate celluloid film, which was then laboriously placed, frame after frame, onto a uniform painted background, to be subsequently shot in sequence. At Yamie Chess Animation Studios, we wanted the soul of our animators to be captured in our short film, and so we hand drew, by fine art pencil, every single cel and storyboard frame of King Tigermore In Strawberry Fields, using the exact same classic process of the traditional old cel technique of which animators like Hurd and Bray would have been proud; then we came back at the end to blend some more up-to-date CGI techniques into the animation process, using "digital ink". Being classical music lovers, we were determined from the outset to synchronize the animated short, to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Symphony 25 in G Minor. It was an ambitious intention, that added another dimension of complexity to the entire animated production; because synchronization meant our production professionals would have to co-ordinate the timing of each movement, pencil stroke and key-frame, directly to Mozart's original sheet music as written by the composer in 1773, over 200 years ago. However, in context to the hand-crafted animation process, we felt synchronization to Mozart's symphony was particularly appropriate, because Yamie Chess® is an original story, and a direct exploration of the dualist ideas of the French mathematician and philosopher, René Descartes, as found in his classic and groundbreaking Mind/Body work, The Passions of the Soul. We teamed up with our friends at U.S. classical music house, Naxos of America, Inc., one of the largest independent classical music distributors in America, and settled on a recording of Mozart's Symphony, No. 25 in G Minor, performed by the respected Orchestra/Ensemble 'Cappella Istropolitana'. In the interactive K-8 educational math coloring book, that is first in the series of Yamie Chess® School Assistants, we enable children to explore our dreamscape through chess, and have combined world-class artwork with a visuo-spatial dimension to teach mathematics, inspiring a real love for children of algebra and geometry, and making the abstract beauty of classic chess, relevant and accessible to young minds. With so much computer generated animation now on the market, one of the unique aspects of Yamie Chess Ltd, is that we have returned to the classical old 2D hand-drawn style of animation. Privately funded, we produce our own storyboarding, character development, animation films and production workflow, and each last pencil stroke is implemented in-house at Yamie Chess Animation Studios (YCAS). Yamie Chess is committed to the highest standards in animation excellence; our team's capabilities extend to sophisticated 2D and 3D animations in feature length, tv cartoon series and beautiful short films, together with educational video gaming across all game platforms, digital and mobile applications. We hope children enjoy coloring and learning the math, as much as we have relished creating every hand-drawn coloring layout of the Yamie Chess School Assistant Each millisecond has been lovingly labored over for painstaking hours, using Hurd and Bray's traditional cel animation process, investing the dedication, passion and hard work of Yamie Chess Ltd's math-loving creative team.
